Konjunktiv I · Passiv

Konjunktiv I Gegenwart Passiv

Subjunctive I, present, passive

werde + P.II

Der Brief werde geschrieben.

Varianten

Hauptsatzwerde + P.IIDer Brief werde geschrieben.
Hauptsatz + Modalverbmüsse + P.II + werdenDer Brief müsse geschrieben werden.
NebensatzP.II + werde…, dass der Brief geschrieben werde.
Nebensatz + ModalverbP.II + werden + müsse…, dass der Brief geschrieben werden müsse.
  • Impersonal passive: Es werde getanzt.
  • Dative kept: Mir werde geholfen.

Substitution: Where the Konjunktiv I form looks the same as the Indikativ (e.g. sie haben, sie werden — never the forms of sein, such as sie seien), use Konjunktiv II instead.Sie sagen, sie hätten keine Zeit. (not: sie haben)

Verbs without a passive: Only verbs with an accusative object form a personal passive. Intransitive verbs with an active doer (tanzen, arbeiten) form an impersonal passive (es wird getanzt); dative verbs keep the dative (mir wird geholfen). Verbs with sein in the Perfekt (gehen, ankommen, sterben), verbs without a real doer, reflexive verbs, haben in the sense of possession, and verbs like bekommen, kennen or wissen have no passive.

How to build it

  1. Make the accusative object of the active sentence the subject: der Brief.
  2. Put werden in Konjunktiv I to match the subject: der Brief werde.
  3. Add the Partizip II of the main verb at the end: Sie sagt, der Brief werde geschrieben.

When to use it

  • Reported passive statements, especially in news: Es heißt, das Gesetz werde geändert.
  • Reported processes where the doer is unknown or unimportant: Die Polizei meldet, der Verdächtige werde noch gesucht.

Examples

  • Es heißt, das Gesetz werde geändert. — It is said that the law is being changed.
  • Die Polizei meldet, der Verdächtige werde noch gesucht. — The police report that the suspect is still being sought.
  • Der Sprecher sagte, die Brücke werde zurzeit repariert. — The spokesman said the bridge was currently being repaired.
  • Im Artikel steht, dem Opfer werde geholfen. — The article says the victim is being helped.
  • Sie behauptet, in diesem Büro werde nie gelacht. — She claims nobody ever laughs in this office.

Pitfalls

  • Plural werden looks like the Indikativ: die Häuser werden abgerissen is the same in both moods, so use würden: Es heißt, die Häuser würden abgerissen.
  • Participle vs. infinitive: der Brief werde geschrieben is present passive; er werde schreiben is future active.
  • werde vs. sei: werde geschrieben reports a process; sei geschrieben reports a finished state (the letter is written).
