Inf. + werden…, dass er den Brief schreiben wird.Nebensatz + Modalverb
werden + Inf. + müssen…, dass er den Brief wird schreiben müssen. How to build it
- Conjugate werden in the Präsens to match the subject: ich werde, du wirst, er wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden.
- Put the main verb in the infinitive: schreiben.
- werden in position 2, the infinitive at the end of the clause: Er wird den Brief schreiben.
When to use it
- Intentions and promises about the future: Ich werde dir morgen helfen.
- Predictions: Es wird bald regnen.
- Assumptions about the present, often with wohl, schon or sicher: Er wird schon zu Hause sein (he is probably at home).
- When there is no time word, Futur I makes the future meaning explicit; with a time word, the Präsens is usually enough: Morgen fahre ich nach Hamburg.
Examples
- Wir werden nächstes Jahr umziehen. — We will move next year.
- Das wirst du bereuen. — You will regret that.
- Sie wird die Prüfung bestimmt bestehen. — She will certainly pass the exam.
- Ich werde nie wieder rauchen. — I will never smoke again.
- Er wird wohl krank sein. — He is probably ill.
Pitfalls
- werden + adjective or noun means “become”, not the future: Er wird müde (he is getting tired), Sie wird Ärztin (she is becoming a doctor). Only werden + infinitive is Futur I.
- Do not overuse it: when a time word already shows the future, the Präsens sounds more natural in everyday speech.
- “Will” is not wollen: Ich will gehen means “I want to go”; Ich werde gehen means “I will go”.
