P.II + werden…, dass der Brief geschrieben wird.Nebensatz + Modalverb
P.II + werden + müssen…, dass der Brief geschrieben werden muss.- Impersonal passive: Es wird getanzt.
- Dative kept: Mir wird geholfen.
Verbs without a passive: Only verbs with an accusative object form a personal passive. Intransitive verbs with an active doer (tanzen, arbeiten) form an impersonal passive (es wird getanzt); dative verbs keep the dative (mir wird geholfen). Verbs with sein in the Perfekt (gehen, ankommen, sterben), verbs without a real doer, reflexive verbs, haben in the sense of possession, and verbs like bekommen, kennen or wissen have no passive.
How to build it
- Start from an active sentence with an accusative object: Er schreibt den Brief.
- The accusative object becomes the subject in the nominative: der Brief.
- Conjugate werden in the Präsens to match the new subject: der Brief wird.
- Form the Partizip II of the main verb and put it at the end: Der Brief wird geschrieben.
- If you want to name the doer, add it with von + dative for a person or agent, or durch + accusative for a means or cause: Der Brief wird von ihm geschrieben.
When to use it
- When the action matters more than who does it, or the doer is unknown or obvious: Hier wird ein neues Krankenhaus gebaut.
- Instructions, recipes and descriptions of processes: Die Zwiebeln werden klein geschnitten.
- Rules and regular procedures: Die Post wird jeden Morgen um neun gebracht.
Examples

Pitfalls
- Only verbs with an accusative object form a personal passive. Intransitive verbs with an active doer (tanzen, arbeiten) form an impersonal passive with es in position 1, or with another element there and no subject at all: Es wird getanzt. / Hier wird gearbeitet. Verbs with sein in the Perfekt (gehen, ankommen, sterben) and verbs without a real doer have no passive at all.
- The dative stays dative: Man hilft mir → Mir wird geholfen, not Ich werde geholfen. The verb stays in the 3rd person singular.
- von or durch: von for the person or agent (von der Polizei), durch for the means or cause (durch das Feuer).
