How to build it

  1. Conjugate werden in the Präsens to match the subject: er wird.
  2. Form the Partizip II of the main verb: schreiben → geschrieben.
  3. Add the infinitive of the auxiliary the main verb takes in the Perfekt: haben or sein.
  4. werden in position 2, then participle + auxiliary at the end: Er wird den Brief geschrieben haben.

When to use it

  • An action that will be completed by a certain point in the future: Bis Montag werde ich es geschafft haben.
  • An assumption about something in the past, often with wohl or schon: Er wird den Zug verpasst haben (he has probably missed the train).

Examples

  • Bis Freitag werde ich das Buch gelesen haben. — By Friday I will have read the book.
  • In einem Jahr werden wir das Haus renoviert haben. — In a year we will have renovated the house.
  • Sie wird wohl schon gegangen sein. — She has probably left already.
  • Bis du kommst, werden die Kinder schon eingeschlafen sein. — By the time you come, the children will have fallen asleep.
  • Er wird es vergessen haben. — He has probably forgotten it.

Pitfalls

  • Rare in speech: for completion in the future, people usually say Perfekt + time word: Bis Montag habe ich es geschafft.
  • haben or sein follows the main verb, exactly as in the Perfekt: gelesen haben, but gegangen sein.
  • The order at the end is fixed: participle first, then the auxiliary infinitive: geschrieben haben, not haben geschrieben.
