BanWord Dodger — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 27 August 2026

BanWord Dodger is a browser extension that flags and swaps risky words on web pages you visit, with an optional AI-assisted rewrite of selected text. It is designed to collect as little as possible. There is no account, no tracking, and no analytics.

1. What the extension stores

Local settings (storage permission)

Your configuration is saved locally in the browser's extension storage on your device: the master on/off switch, the wordlist and severity level, display options (such as underlining swapped words), and — only if you enable the optional AI rewrite — your AI provider choice and API key. This data never leaves your device except as described in section 2.

Page content

Word swapping happens entirely on your device. The extension reads text on the pages you visit in order to replace matching words, but that page content is not transmitted or stored anywhere unless you explicitly trigger the AI rewrite feature.

2. Optional AI rewrite (host permissions)

The AI rewrite feature is optional and off until you add your own API key (BYOK). When you select text and choose “Rewrite”, the extension sends that selected text and your API keydirectly to the AI provider you chose —api.anthropic.com orapi.openai.com. This is the sole reason the extension requests access to those hosts. The request goes straight from your browser to the provider;we operate no server and never receive your text or key.Text you send is processed by that provider under their own terms and privacy policy. Do not submit secrets or other people's personal data unless you have a lawful reason.

3. What we do not do

  • We do not sell or transfer your data to third parties.
  • We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or creditworthiness.
  • We do not run analytics or tracking, and we operate no backend server.
  • We do not collect your browsing history.

4. Retention

All settings and your API key remain in your browser until you clear them, remove a category, or uninstall the extension. Uninstalling removes the extension's local storage.

5. Attribution

The optional prebuilt obscenity list is derived from the LDNOOBW “List of Dirty, Naughty, Obscene, and Otherwise Bad Words”, used under CC-BY-4.0.
